Lt. Col. John Gomersall's Napoleonic War

Chapter

The 58th Regiment in Jersey

Early in 1802, the 58th Regiment returned home, and disembarking at Cork in February, marched to Kinsale, moving on to Waterford in April where it remained for the next 18 months. The 2nd/58th was formed in Ireland in September 1803. At the end of 1803 both battalions moved from Ireland to Jersey. In January 1805, they divided, the 2nd/58th remaining at St. Heliers, while the 1st/58th moved to Portsmouth and thence to Winchester. The 2nd/58th were in Jersey for the next three years, with recruiting parties being sent to places all around Ireland , England and Scotland.

Jersey was in a very vulnerable situation, so close to the French mainland and important as a strategic Naval base and for espionage and surveillance.

Lt. John Gomersall was promoted to Captain in the 2nd/58th in 1804.
