Edward Gomersall
(1865-1935)
Edward Gomersall was the fourth son of William and Agnes Gomersall,
born 25th January 1865. Only one year separated Edward from
his younger brother John. Both of them attended the new Kirkby
Malham School built by Walter Morrison to replace the old school
next to the Church and situated half way between Kirkby Malham
and Malham, so that children from both villages could get there
more easily. No doubt Edward and John would walk from Otterburn
over the fields, a distance of about 4 miles.

There is an account in the School Log Book of an
incident involving the two Gomersall boys "..
and in May 1876 Anne Peacock and other girls had penalties for
waiting in the road last night so that Edward and John Gomersall
overtook them, then chased them and finally John Gomersall kissed
Anne Peacock. For this he and his brother were caned." |
When Edward left school he worked as a wood sawyer in forestry
and apparently travelled throughout the country including Scotland
doing the job. It was believed in the family that at some stage
he went to the Argentine to work on the Argentine Railway, owned
by the Walter Morrison of Malham Tarn. We know that in 1891 he
was living at 39, Westbourne Place, Manningham, Bradford. It was
whilst working in Devon, however, that he met his wife Serena
Paytress. Serena had apparently been in service to a wealthy family
and was described by her grand daughter as being 'very proper'.
They settled in Hull and lived at 44, Brecon Street where they
had 2 children Thomas Edward (born in Bradford in 1895) and Helen
Mary. Thomas Edward married and lived at Sutherland Avenue, Hull.
They had two children Elizabeth and Margerie. Elizabeth married
Joe Harrison, live in Bishop Burton near Beverley and has a son
Roger. Margerie has 2 children Martin and Hilary. Thomas Edward
died in 1980. |
