Elizabeth was christened on 1st
October 1859 at Kirkby malham, daughter of William and Agnes.
She was probably educated at home, and not very much is known
about her. However, she married twice. First to Jonathan
Sturgess who was a Sporting and Animal painter
who worked from a studio at 148, The Strand in London and was
the chief hunting and racing illustrator for the London
Illustrated News for about 10 years from 1875 and exhibited
widely in the London galleries. He also contributed to various
other publications including The Sporting and Dramatic News.
He made illustrations for the Badminton Library Volume on
Hunting and also illustrated several books and magazines.
[Four hunting scenes by Johnathan Sturgess were
given to Elizabeth's father William and these are now in the
possession of David, Roger and Michael Gomersall]
Elizabeth remarried presumably on Jonathan's death to a Mr Dukes.
They lived in London but little else is known.
