Frederick
William Gomersall was the third son of William and Agnes Gomersall
of Otterburn and was christened on 23rd February 1858. His early
education was probaly similar to his two elder brothers William
and Hubert going to Dame Huson and a 'governess' before going
to Giggleswick School. He left Giggleswick in 1872 at the age
of 14. He was supposed to be good looking. At some point he
was employed by Rickards Mill, Bell Busk as a commercial traveller
and was desribed as such when on 16th August 1883 he was married
to Martha Louisa Warrington (23) daughter of George warrington
a cattle dealer from Bedford, Hubert and his sister Agnes Hilda
witnessed the marriage certificate. Fred was living in Leeds
at the time in Clarendon Place, but by 1885 he was in Richmond
Road, Headingley. He contiued to work as a commercial traveller
for a few years after his marriage, until 1888 (Kelly Dir.)
when he was now living at 19 Hyde Park Terrace, Leeds. By 1890,
he was described in the Leeds directory
as a tobacconist at 100 Woodhouse Lane, and was still there
in 1893 (Kelly Dir.). Sometime within the following 2 years
he and Martha moved to Sheffield, where he continued the tobacconist
business at 99, Barker's Pool. He was still there in 1898 when
Martha died (10th April) of 'Tubercular Exhaustion' aged 37.
By 1901 Fred was a newsagent at 2 Brightmore Street in Sheffield
but there is no trace of him there after 1903.
Fred's father had died in 1901 and his mother Agnes and sister
Caroline went to live in Eccles where his brother John was a
successful butcher. It is probable that he went to live in Eccles
around this time where he died of a 'Cerebral Haemorrhage'
on 15th May 1910 at 5 Gilda Brook Rd., Eccles. He was supposed
to have gone blind in his final years and was nursed by Caroline
and his mother. There are no children known from the marriage.
